The California Golden Overtones are the premier all-female a cappella group at the University of California, Berkeley. From rap to doo-wop to jazz to contemporary to country, these accomplished performers embrace all musical styles and interpret them into a powerful, female sound. The Overtones have recorded multiple albums, most recently "No Boys Allowed," and placed second in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) in 2001. Since the 1970s, the Overtones have captivated audiences all over the country (and Europe!) with their tight harmonies, synchronization, and power. The Overtones can be found performing regularly at Cal Football games and University functions, as well as all around the Bay Area at private events and parties. Two of the most recognizable dynamic female powerhouses, Sheryl Sandberg and Lena Dunham, have declared they are some of the Overtones's biggest fans. However, the greatest fans in the world the Overtones perform for are Cal students, for whom they've sung for more than 30 years. Come watch The Overtones perform in front of Sather Gate every Friday at 1 PM to see them live!

We are proud to present our annual Spring Show on April 9th and 10th at 7:30pm in 112 Wurster Hall! This year, we are happy to feature our dear friends, The UC Men's Octet, as our openers - as well as some surprise guests both nights! Be sure to get tickets soon before they sell out at tickets.berkeley.edu. Tickets are only $8 for students, and $10 for general admission with an increase of $2 for at-the-door purchases. See you there!

We also sing on Sproul Plaza during the school year every Friday at 1pm in front of Sather Gate. We'd love it if you'd join us!
"As the host of the largest annual campus football tailgate, the Lair of the Golden Bear is great friends of the California Golden Overtones. For thirteen years, the Overtones have been happy to share the gift of fantastic a cappella music and relentless Cal enthusiasm to our loyal alumni and their children. It is not a stretch to say their boundless energy and talent brings smiles to everyone present, and helps us fulfill a very important mission of building a richer Cal community!"

- David Smith, Lair of the Golden Bear
"The Overtones are a must for any successful event. Their class, sass, and powerful voices will, without a doubt, blow the audience away. They have a wide range of song choices, and we were able to choose what kind of songs we wanted performed. The group was professional and very easy to work with. The Suitcase Clinic was very grateful for their performance at the Benefit Concert!"

- Maitreyee Mittal
"The Overtones are one of the most requested groups from the Class Reunion events. They are always professional, arriving a few minutes before they are asked to perform and checking in on what the best staging for the group will be. They sing great Cal songs that get everyone in the Cal Spirit! The Overtones are also great at singing period music for each group they are performing at - from classics of the 1950's to anything you can hear on the radio! They are fantastic!"

- Maya Goehring-Harris
"The Golden Overtones are absolutely fantastic! They opened TEDxBerkeley with a bang, and the energy in the entire room was tangible after their performance. Their repertoire is extremely varied, and they are very accommodating to the thematic needs of your event. The Golden Overtones are also very professional, and easy to work with. I cannot recommend them highly enough!"

- Erin Roberts, Curator for TEDxBerkeley
"Being in the california golden overtones was truly my favorite experience at Cal. Although the time commitment is intense, the friendships you form and the performances you have are extremely rewarding!"

- Sachi Holla, Overtones Alumni
"The Golden Overtones performed at our annual holiday party in Stanley Hall, held in December 2013 and attended by several hundred scientists and engineers. I found it very easy to arrange the logistics with the group and appreciated help in picking the song list. Group members were punctual and gracious, and, most importantly, they gave an energetic, polished performance that was the highlight of our party! I would definitely hire them again."

- Jan Ambrosini, QB3 Communications Director
"Being in tones created the perfect opportunity to grow as an artist and a leader. It also opened up amazing networks within not only the Berkeley a Capella community, but singing groups up and down the west coast!"

- Audrey Baker, Overtones Alumni
"I had the pleasure of working with the Overtones during our closing ceremony for a few CalSO sessions as well as for our Overnight Host Program. Not only are the an excellent organization to work with in terms of planning and logistics but they all have phenomenal voices and are truly entertainers! I would highly recommend them if you are looking for a fun group of women who have amazing voices, can amp up an audience, and who know how to wow a crowd!"

The California Golden Overtones perform at a wide variety of functions including benefit shows, school ceremonies, tailgates, school rallies, reunions, weddings, showcases, and private parties. We pride ourselves on being punctual, quick to respond to requests, having a large repertoire, and a variety of performance uniforms suited to an array of occasions.

We would love to perform at your next event!

If you have a passion for singing, come out and audition! Auditions are held twice a year: at the end of every spring semester and the beginning of every fall semester. Please prepare a short solo to sing unaccompanied that shows off your voice. You may also want to bring homework as auditions often last all day!

Being an Overtone is an academic year commitment!

We hold three 3-hour rehearsals — Tuesday and Thursday from 6-9pm, and Sunday from 10-1pm — each week, in addition to a 1-hour rehearsal before our weekly Sproul performances on Fridays at 1PM.

We ask that you prepare one solo song (about a verse and a chorus) to sing a cappella. We suggest you sing whatever shows off your voice and style best! If you have any other a cappella skills, such as vocal percussion, we ask that you prepare a sample of that as well. Auditions typically last all day, so be sure to bring snacks and homework while waiting.

Please enter the Cesar Chavez Basement through the Strawberry Creek entrance. If you have any more questions, please email our business manager, Joban Gill, at overtones@ucchoral.berkeley.edu. See you then Bears!
